The Cribs – Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant? / Our Bovine Public

(Wichita)

It’s easy to dismiss The Cribs – as many have – as just another rehashed product of the Strokes-fired indie band factory. In short, not especially relevant. Then again, it’s far wiser to judge them for what they are: an uncomplicated but unobtrusively good band for the young (or young-at-heart).  This Edwyn Collins-produced double A-side is just that. Of the two, Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant? is easily superior: slightly lethargic, it feels like a late night, cards-on-the-table dust-up, in the best possible way. Our Bovine Public is vaguely witty but lacks direction and – dare I say it – sounds like a weak Strokes number sung by a Londoner. One out of two ain’t bad.
